Police nab 94 Urumqi riot suspects
POLICE have arrested 94 wanted suspects in the July 5 riot in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The suspects were among 382 people seized by Xinjiang police in a "strike hard" campaign that started early last month, said a spokesman for the regional public security department.
He said he could not give specific details about the charges they will face.
He said the campaign, which broke up 66 criminal rings, was aimed at enhancing social stability and dispelling public concern over security in the region.
The riot left 197 people dead, mostly Han Chinese, and 1,600 others injured.
Volunteers have since helped maintain stability by helping public security officials.
