Police narrows search for escaped prisoner
HEBEI Province police said they have narrowed down their hunt for the elusive jail breaker who escaped from the Shenzhou City Prison four days ago.
Wang Zhenqing, the fugitive, was serving a 10-year sentence for a theft he committed with three partners in May. His escape upset many because Wang was an army veteran and had combat and survival skills.
Shenzhou Prison authorities have closed the compound to all visitors while local police and armed police are searching for Wang in a large corn field south of the prison, the Beijing Times reported today.
Police patrols were deployed every ten meters on the road around Langwo Village and Datun Village to check every traveler. One villager reported that he saw some freshly bitten corncobs.
Wei Sen, a Shenzhou Prison officer, told the newspaper that Wang climbed over the wall using a rope he made of woven plastic bags.
He admitted that a guard saw him escaping but failed to stop him because "it was raining and foggy," but he gave no more details.
Shenzhou Prison was built in the 1970s with deteriorating conditions. A new compound is currently under construction.
Insiders said jail breaking has happened there many times but all the escaped inmates were caught within three days. The prison declined to comment on this.
