Police officer jailed for torture

TWO police officers were jailed yesterday in Jiangxi Province for torturing a suspect to death trying to get a confession.

The Nanchang Intermediate People's Court sentenced Deng Hongfei to 12 years' jail and Xia Xiangdong, director of the criminal investigation team, got one year.

Two other police officers were also charged but escaped punishment, Southern Metropolis Daily reported today.

Wan Jianguo died on August 8 last year after he had been taken into custody for his involvement in selling tainted human antibodies, which killed six people.

They died between May 22 and 28 at the No. 2 Hospital Affiliated with Nanchang University after being injected with tainted human immunoglobulin produced by Jiangxi Boya Bio Medicine Co.

Wan, a sales representative of Nanchang County Pharmaceutical Co, which sold the product, was taken into custody on July 5 last year to assist the police investigation, the report said.

When he died in custody on August 8 he had scars all over his body, his wife Wu Peifeng said.

The court said Wang was tortured by two groups of policemen for 17 hours before his death.

Police officers gave him electric shocks, hung him up, beat him with a wooden stick and hit his head against the railing of the window, according to the report.

Nine police officers were investigated for Wan's death but only four were charged. Wan's wife was not satisfied with the verdict and said she will appeal.

The investigation into the tainted protein case was suspended after Wan died and has not resumed.
