Police officers held in 'torture' case
TWO police officers have been detained for allegedly using torture to obtain a confession after a murder suspect in northwest China died during police questioning.
Prosecutors in Gansu Province are investigating after a family member claimed that 27-year-old He Yong, a bank clerk in Xihe County, was "covered by more than 80 injuries, possibly caused by electric shock and lashes, with his head bleeding" when he was rushed to hospital on April 2, The Beijing Times reported yesterday.
He Jinku, the suspect's uncle, was called by police who said He had had a heart attack when he was being questioned on April 1 about the robbing, raping and killing of a 17-year-old high school student.
A senior police officer surnamed Tian said they gave He two pills after He said he was suffering from heart problems.
But the family said He didn't have any history of such a disease.
He Jinku claimed that when he and other relatives demanded an explanation, an officer, Yang Qixin, beat He's sister and threatened to "ransack their home after the case ended."
He's mother said they were repeatedly pushed to bury the body quickly during meetings with country government officials.
