Police official jailed in bribes case

A FORMER senior official with the Beijing Public Security Bureau was sentenced to 12 years in jail yesterday for taking 1.5 million yuan (US$ 220,000) in bribes from Huang Guangyu, the former richest person on Chinese mainland now in jail for 14 years over bribery, illegal dealing and insider trading.

Jin Hongli, 48, deputy head of the economic crime investigation division of the bureau, was found guilty of taking the money to be a middleman for Huang and three tax officials who helped Huang conceal his tax fraud.

Jin arranged for Huang to meet Sun Haiting, former director of the inspection department of the State Administration of Taxation in 2006. Sun took 1 million yuan in bribes from Huang to help conceal his company GOME's fraud.

Jin also introduced Huang to Liang Conglin, former director of the inspection department of the administration's Beijing office and Ling Wei, a subordinate of Liang's.

All three were sentenced to prison terms of up to 14 years earlier this month.
