Police probe after baby swallows 21 nails

POLICE have been called to investigate how 21 needles and nails got into a one-year-old girl's stomach as doctors suggested someone close to the baby could have fed them to her.

X-rays showed the girl yesterday excreted the last nail in her body after six days, doctor Shen Zhijun with Yulin City Children's Hospital in northwest China's Shaanxi Province told Hsw.cn.

The girl was sent to the hospital after her parents found two nails in her mouth at their home in Mizhi County on May 5.

An X-ray indicated she had four other nails in her body.

Though she excreted the nails later in the hospital, daily X-rays found more needles and nails mysteriously showing up in her body.

Doctors then isolated her in a single ward and finally no nails were found in her body after she excreted 21.

Her parents had suggested she could have eaten the nails by herself as her father is a carpenter and there are a lot of nails at their home.

But doctors excluded the possibility, saying they had given the girl nails but she showed no interest. There were also no nails on the ward, they pointed out.

Doctors suggested someone close to the girl had fed the nails to her late at night in hospital. They have called police.
