Police probe deaths of 2 young girls in washing machine at home
A REPORT that two sisters aged 2 and 4 died after spinning in a washing machine at home was being investigated by police in Nanchang, capital of east China's Jiangxi Province, officials announced today.
Police launched an investigation after netizens questioned how the girls could squeeze themselves into the machine and how such an overloaded machine could continue to run.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday afternoon when the two girls were playing alone in their living room. Their father was watching TV in a bedroom and their mother was cooking in the kitchen, local news portal jxgdw.com reported today.
Their grandfather said they might have used a chair to climb into the washing machine. They may have touched the start button accidentally and gotten trapped, he said.
Though their parents heard something dropping, they didn't realize what it was until five minutes later, when they discovered the toddlers were missing, he said.
The family immediate started searching for the girls and about a half-hour later, the father saw a flashing washing machine light and his wife said she hadn't started the machine, the new portal reported.
When they opened the door, they found the two girls, covered in blood and huddled together. The girls were sent to the township clinic immediately and doctors pronounced them dead, a witness said.
The family arranged the funeral on the same day without requesting an autopsy.
The news portal said the parents also have a 1-year-old son.
