Police probe into Huashan Mountain stabbing
POLICE have started investigating a stabbing that seriously injured a tourist couple at the popular Huashan Mountain tourist spot Tuesday night. The incident occurred after thousands of tourists found themselves trapped on the mountain and asked for ticket refunds, police of northwest Shaanxi Province said today.
The incident occurred after 27,000 tourists poured into the Huashan Mountain scenic area within half a day on Tuesday, leaving about 2,000 of them stranded on the mountain after the tourist volume exceeded the cable car capacity.
Angry tourists who climbed down the mountain by foot blocked the scenic spot's gate and asked for a cable car and shuttle bus ticket refund, which later escalated into a brawl Tuesday evening, according to the Huashan tourism management committee.
In the conflict, a woman from Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was stabbed twice in the back and her husband also received knife wounds in the head at about 11pm, the husband wrote on a microblog. He and others also posted pictures of their injuries.
Witnesses said four or five among the dozens of suspects were dressed in security guards uniforms, triggering online reports that the scenic spot's security guards stabbed tourists.
Huashan's management authority, however, denied the suspects were staff members.
"Information circulating online is not the real case," Huashan's management authority responded yesterday. "Our staff members would never get into conflicts with tourists."
The stabbing happened at a parking lot outside the attraction. It was believed to have occurred during a brawl between two groups of tourists, Huashan management told China Central Television today.
