Police probe mystery of missing deaf children

SIX deaf and mute children in northwestern China's Shaanxi Province have been reported missing since the middle of June.

All of them in Shaanxi's Baoji City were seen with strangers, who also appeared to be deaf and mute, ahead of their sudden absence.

Police are investigating after being alerted by the parents, cnwest.com, a Shaanxi major news portal, reported yesterday.

Three children went missing on June 18, the others on August 5 and 22, it said.

One mother said her 14-year-old daughter and a close female friend had not been seen since June 18.

Strangers were seen on all three dates, either with the children or lingering around their homes, parents said.

There was no indication of anything untoward before the children went missing and they left without taking clothes or money.

The parents have been searching for their children ever since and even traveled to neighboring provinces, but none of the children has yet been found, according to the report.

Most of the children were students at a local school for physically challenged youngsters. The school authority said similar cases had happened years before but many of the previously lost children later contacted their families.

"Those children find it hard to communicate with common people but find it easy to go along with other deaf and mute people, making them prey to some deaf and mute criminals who encourage them to commit crimes," the school said.
