Police probe official's death

POLICE in eastern Shandong Province are investigating the motive behind an official's suicide in which he allegedly hanged himself with a nylon rope at his office.

The publicity department in Yanggu County said police have ruled out murder after Chen Guoqing, deputy director of the social security maintenance office under the county department, was found to have hanged himself at his office on Wednesday, but the motive is still under investigation, The Beijing News reported yesterday.

Chen's relatives and friends speculate he might have committed suicide due to a job transfer according to a letter left by Chen, the report said.

"He hanged himself on a ceiling fan at his office with a nylon rope," Zhu Bingli, an official with the Yanggu County government, told the newspaper.

A letter left by the 50-year-old Chen apologized to his family and friends while expressed discontentment to a job transfer, according to the report citing Zhu.

Chen was transferred to the current position from deputy director of the county's bureau for letters and calls in November last year. In the letter, he claimed "the appointment is against the principle of civil servant employment," the report said.

The county's publicity department said Chen started to complain about the new job one month after he took the position and later showed symptoms of depression.

Chen asked for 10 days of sick leave during this year's Spring Festival, according to the publicity department.

One of Chen's friends told the newspaper that he had a daughter and a mother in her 80s and kept a low profile at work.
