Nine people were transferred to police over a fire that ripped through a large grain storage center in Heilongjiang Province on Friday, police said.
The blaze in Huayuan Township of Lindian County, a major grain base in the country, was caused by a short circuit, fire authorities confirmed.
Among the nine, Gao Yanping, director of the grain storage center, and his deputy, Luo Hongquan, were released on bail. Two senior officials and five workers remain in custody over suspected negligence, according to police.
The fire was spotted at one barn around 1:15 pm on Friday. Strong winds and high temperatures helped it spread to another 77 barns. The barns had a combined storage capacity of 47,000 tons. It was finally contained at 4:30 pm.
Investigators tracked the origin of the fire to a power distribution box near one of the grain bins in the first barn to catch fire. Results showed that sparks from a broken wire ignited reed mats and sacks nearby, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Among the affected barns, 60 were filled with corn and 18 with rice. Two tons of grain in each barn were burnt. The total economic loss and the cause of the fire are still being investigated.
