Police reasserts the village petitioner is not murdered
POLICE in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, reconfirmed that a village head who petitioned for years against officials' land abuse was killed in an ordinary traffic accident.
In a statement released yesterday, the police said findings of further investigation had ruled out the possibility that Qian Yunhui, 53, was murdered as widely-spread rumors said he was held down by four men on the path of a coming truck on Saturday.
The police said the alleged eyewitness, Qian Chengyu, admitted that he just saw the victim lying crushed under a wheel of a truck and didn't see how he died. Qian Chengyu also denied the rumors that Qian was pressed to the ground by four men, Xinhua reported today.
Police said a lie detector test showed Qian Chengyu was telling the truth. He and five others were detained for allegedly beating policemen at the scene after the accident.
Police said another villager, Huang Diyan, was quoted by some media as saying she also saw four men holding the villager leader down to the ground, has turned herself in for lying about the incident.
Huang told police she thought she would get money from journalists with her made-up story. She just related the rumors she heard from others and wasn't present at the scene.
Wenzhou police also revealed the contents of a recording of Qian Yunhui's last phone call, in which a local resident, surnamed Wang, informed him of some village affairs. Police said this dispelled the rumor that Qian was lured by a township official to get to the spot for murder.
