Police re-enact suspicious hanging
POLICE have re-enacted a suspect's suicide in a cell to dispel suspicions over the death in Kunming City, in China's southwestern Yunnan Province.
They invited reporters from six newspapers to the interrogation room where Xing Kun allegedly committed suicide, reported today's Yunnan Information Newspaper.
Police said last week that suspected thief Xing used a one-yuan (15 US cents) banknote to unlock his manacles and hanged himself using a 175cm-long shoelace in an area that wasn't overlooked by security cameras.
A detained thief showed reporters how he used a one-yuan note to unlock his handcuffs in under two minutes. Police also bought shoes similar to those Xing wore and used the laces to hang a 70-kilogram barbell, the report said.
Prosecutors said they are still investigating how Xing could have sneaked in paper money and shoelaces, which should have been confiscated in custody.
The victim's father Xing Caifang said his son had no reason to kill himself, despite being accused of stealing game machines from a store.
