Police release diseased dealer

A drug dealer, caught in a village in Guangdong Province, was released by police before they took him into custody because the man had AIDS and tuberculosis.

A police officer surnamed Huang said the 36-year-old suspect, surnamed Zou, had been detained several times but was never jailed because of his contagious diseases and medical bills. The prison refused to take him, Guangzhou Daily reported yesterday.

Zou was a veteran drug trafficker, police said. He wandered Jingtou Village peddling drugs. He said this did not concern him because police would never catch him, the newspaper reported.

Police found 5 grams of heroin in his pockets, worth 2,800 yuan (US$441).

Huang said they did not know how to deal with Zou, adding: "He was caught six times this year. Last year, we took him to hospital for a blood test."

Villagers said drug trafficking had been rampant in Jingtou since Zou and his boss started trafficking drugs two years ago.

According to China's prison rules, criminals with a severe disease could be bailed for medical treatment.
