Police reward for volunteers comes under fire
POLICE in a small city in eastern Jiangsu Province have found themselves caught in a dispute after they began offering rewards of up to 1,000 yuan (US$145.84) to anyone who assist them in law enforcement.
The incentive policy, introduced by Liu Yajun, the police chief in Suqian City, has drawn criticism that the money reward would hurt the image of volunteers and motivate people to act for money, Beijing Times reported today.
One can get 10 yuan for mediating a domestic dipute and 200 yuan for tip-offs about a fugitive, the policy said.
The city's police have rewarded 206,400 yuan to 1,521 security volunteers for their good deeds.
However, many worried that this incentive policy can cause local moral standard to decline in a long run, saying some people may not provide help for justice but for money.
