Police rule out rape, murder in woman's death

BEIJING police said today that the 22-year-old woman who died in a fall inside a wholesale market last Friday had no connection with a sexual assault or murder as it was widely rumored.

The woman surnamed Yuan was a migrant from Anhui Province. She worked at the Jingwen Clothing Market in Fengtai District. She entered the building last Thursday evening alone and fell to death around 5am the next day, police said.

Police ruled out allegations that she was poisoned, raped or murdered after examining surveillance video footages and conducting an autopsy. But they didn't say whether she died in an accident or a suicide.

Hundreds of migrant workers from Anhui, including Yuan's boyfriend and relatives, gathered outside the wholesale market yesterday, holding manners to demand justice for the dead woman.

Earlier, netizens speculated in online discussion that Yuan was gang-raped in a locked room and had to take the risk to jump off the room.
