Police sack boss of dead binge drinker
A TRAFFIC police chief in south China's Shenzhen City has been sacked after he designated an officer who died in a drinking binge as a "martyr who died in the line of duty."
Off-duty officer Chen Lujun, 38, choked to death on his own vomit after he drank too much alcohol during a banquet with government officials from Mabu village on October 28.
His boss Xie Feiyong decided to designate him a martyr to win more compensation for Chen's family, Guangzhou Daily reported today. But he had no permission to do so, said Shenzhen's traffic police authority.
Chen's family is now protesting at the traffic brigade in Baoan District, and has rejected an offer of 650,000 yuan (US$95,190) compensation. They are demanding 4.8 million yuan.
Death by drinking is not rare among Chinese officials. A water official in Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, died of a heart attack at age 47 after drinking excessive amounts of alcohol at a banquet this July.
