Police seize 14 tons of poisonous bogus salt

POISONOUS fake salt has been discovered being produced in Changsha, Hunan Province, police announced yesterday.

Officers confiscated nearly 14 tons of fake salt in the provincial capital city.

The salt is so poisonous that eating three grams at one time can kill a person, said police.

Officers said they seized the bogus salt - a counterfeit of the famous brand "Xue Tian" (Snow Day) produced by the Hunan Salt Group Co - before it could reach the market.

But officers still advised consumers in Changsha and nearby areas not to buy salt with a registration number ending "618J."

Nine suspects have been arrested since whistleblowers reported a suspicious production base in late September.

After a month's investigation, police learned that a suspect, surnamed Wang, had been purchasing industrial salt and Xue Tian packaging since March.

In a suburban area in Changsha, police discovered that suspects were processing and packing the counterfeit salt which had a high level of toxic sodium nitrite.
