Police shoot cop killer after 9-hour standoff

POLICE in northwest China's Gansu Province shot dead a man last night who had allegedly killed a policeman responding to a domestic dispute two days previously.

They also rescued unharmed a 78-year-old man being held hostage, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Police located Fu Xiaolin, 39, hiding in a five-story building in Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province, after being tipped off by nearby residents.

The hostage was reportedly Fu's cousin who had just sent his grandson to school, the newspaper said.

Police reached the building around 9:20am and condoned the block off, cutting water, power and gas to the neighborhood.

After hours of negotiation, Fu freed his hostage about 4pm, but continued shooting at police, the report said.

Police forced an attack around 6pm and shot Fu in the head around 8pm, the newspaper said.

He had shot police officer Dou Yong, 40, at Fu's home two days previously.
