A DOOMED love affair turned to tragedy today in southwestern China's Chongqing city when a 21-year-old student abducted his sweetheart and stabbed her mother before police shot him dead.
The dead man, surnamed Zuo, was infatuated by his classmate surnamed Jiang, China News Service reported, but her mother fiercely objected to his courtship.
Zuo allegedly went to Jiang's home this morning armed with a knife, and stabbed her mother several times. He then grabbed the young woman and held her for more than two hours in a face-off with police in Qingcaopo district, the report said.
Zuo was shot dead after negotiation efforts failed around 11:30 am, according to Xinhua news agency.
Jiang's mother is being treated for stab wounds in hospital, where her daughter is being treated for trauma. A relative told reporters that the young couple had never had a relationship.
