Police shoot dead fleeing robbery suspect

POLICE in south China's Guangdong Province shot dead an alleged robber and seized another five after the suspects crashed an SUV at police checkpoints after a car chase.

A Foshan City police officer was trapped in his car after the men crashed their car into his during the chase, reported Guangzhou Daily today.

Police shot a 35-year-old suspect surnamed Wang, who died later in hospital. He and the others are alleged to have robbed a construction site about 3:30 am yesterday.

The case is still under investigation. It is the latest of a wave of construction site robberies recently in Foshan.

Nine men robbed two tons of steel worth 7,000 yuan (US$1,025) from a highway construction site earlier this month. Thirteen people armed with steel bars and cleavers robbed a railway construction site and took four oxygen cylinders in August.
