Police shoot escapee dead, capture rest
POLICE shot dead one prison escapee and arrested three others who killed a prison guard, knocked out a janitor and then stole a cab in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Gao Bo was named as the escapee shot dead in what was described as a fierce confrontation with police. One police officer was injured and a hostage held by the gang was also hurt, reported China Central Television today. No details of their conditions were revealed.
The other three inmates Qiao Haiqiang, Dong Jiaji, and Li Hongbin were all arrested during the fight, about 60 kilometers from Hohhot No. 2 Prison, the report said.
Gao had been found guilty of manslaughter while the other three were convicted for armed robbery. Two were on death row and two serving life sentences.
The prisoners escaped custody when laboring in the maximum-security prison on Saturday. They were seized in Helinger County where the region borders Shanxi Province. Police said they might have wanted flee into Shanxi, according to Inner Mongolia Daily Online.
The four were spotted by a villager surnamed Wang in Helinger. Wang said a man with a shaved head knocked at his door and asked for a drink of water about 4:50am yesterday.
Wang said he knew about the Hohhot prison break and was suspicious of the man's Shanxi accent, which was mentioned in wanted posters.
After dawn, Wang found four different pairs of footprints heading to a small forest. He called police immediately.
Police recovered clothes and food the four abandoned and deployed more than 600 heavily armed officers to arrest them. They were captured 67 hours after the escape.
