Police shoot five villagers in self-defense
POLICE shot and wounded five villagers during a violent protest that injured 11 officers and torched a police car in a southwest China county on Tuesday.
All the wounded have been sent to hospital for treatment and the city government is investigating the incident, Lipu County government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region told today's China News Service.
The attack occurred when police went to Maling Town to detain 12 villagers who had allegedly attacked judges and police officers on December 15 last year over a land dispute.
In Tuesday's attack, villagers surrounded police and demanded they released the suspects, throwing stones and attacking them with swords, logs and plows before setting fire to a police car, the report said.
In self-defense, officers fired their guns but failed to deter the mob. They were forced to shoot some of the attackers and wounded five villagers, the government said.
