POLICE shot dead a man who killed one pedestrian dead and stabbed 11 others in a rampage in Heilongjiang Province about 7 am today.
Harbin City police said they used tear gas against the 38-year-old man after he ran through a crowded street brandishing knives and attacking passers-by. They shot him dead after other efforts failed, reported Xinhua news agency today.
An unnamed passer-by was quoted as saying the man was mentally ill but police had no comment.
The 11 hurt were all being treated in a hospital while police are investigating.
