Police shoot knifeman dead

POLICE in east China's Jiangsu Province yesterday shot dead a man who demanded 1 million yuan (US$146,505) for an 84-year-old woman he was holding hostage.

Song Donghan, 34, a native of Jiangxi Province, entered the woman's 25th-floor home in Nanjing by disguising himself as an electrical worker and wearing a wig, mask and glasses, today's Modern Express newspaper reported.

Police told the newspaper he held a knife to the woman's throat and demanded the ransom from her daughter when she returned home about 6pm.

The daughter called her husband to raise the money and warned him that the kidnapper had explosives on his body.

Police immediately evacuated residents from the building and called emergency medical staff.

Around 7pm, an undercover policeman pretended to bring some money into the apartment, distracting the knifeman and helping a sniper to take aim at him.

The hostage was unharmed.
