Police shoot man dead after knifepoint siege

POLICE in southwestern China's Chongqing city said they shot dead a man in the city's Shapingba District after he allegedly stabbed a woman and held her hostage with her daughter this morning.
The suspect stabbed a woman with a knife about 8am today and held her daughter as hostage in a two-hour face-off with police. He was shot dead after negotiation efforts failed, according to Xinhua news agency.
The police said the woman is in a serious condition as she was stabbed several times. Her daughter was also exhausted and both are being treated in hospital.
The dead man's motive and identity is unknown.
