Police shoot man dead after standoff with pregnant woman

POLICE yesterday shot a man dead in Chongqing after he killed a man and held a pregnant woman hostage at knife-point in the city's Yongchuan District.

An officer hidden on the fourth floor of a building opposite the scene shot the suspect with a rifle about 10am after negotiations failed, Chongqing Morning Post reported on its Website yesterday.

The woman, in her seventh month of pregnancy, was identified as Wang Fang. She was taken to hospital as she was slashed by the suspect several times.

Her boyfriend, Chen Yonghai, was stabbed to death and thrown from the second-floor premises by Liu Yong.

Liu, a drug addict, tried to borrow money from neighbors and was refused twice before he knocked on Chen's door, police said.

Chen, 24, and Wang, 25, lived in an apartment building in Shengli Road.

Liu, 26, broke into their home about 7am and talked to Chen for about 40 minutes before he killed him with a chopper snatched from the kitchen.

Chen's body landed on a plastic rain cover beneath.

His mother fainted after the attack. Her only other child, another son, died four years ago.

Chen's cousin Hu Qiang called police after he saw Liu with Wang at Chen's home.

Hu was Chen's colleague at a coal mine and rushed to his home when he was told that Chen had jumped or fallen.

Hu broke in and was threatened by the armed Liu.

Chen and Wang had planned to register their marriage today, the report said.

Jiang's mother was against Zuo courting her daughter.

Zuo went to Jiang's home armed with a knife on October 26 and stabbed the mother several times.

City police said Zuo was shot dead after persuasion to release Jiang failed.
