Police shoot man dead as woman held hostage
A MAN was shot dead yesterday morning by police after he took a female waitress hostage and injured her, officers in Lechang City in Guangdong Province said.
The man pointed two knives at his own abdomen in Country Garden Phoenix Hotel around 7:30am and claimed killers were chasing him.
He soon grabbed the waitress as a hostage and placed the blades at her neck, said Liu Hong, deputy police chief.
Police were mobilized to the scene soon after the incident was reported.
Liu said the man threatened to kill the waitress when he ordered officers to open the back door of a police car and one cop to drive.
The officer driving the police car attempted to soothe the man as other police cars followed in pursuit. However, the man didn't calm down and became more agitated about 8:30am, when he tried to hack the woman in the side of her head, Liu said.
The woman sustained head, neck and hand injuries. Seeing the waitress was in danger, the officer driving the car shot and killed the suspect, according to the deputy police chief.
The man didn't work at the hotel or know the waitress.
Liu said they were still investigating to determine if the man had a mental disorder.
