Police unconvinced by 'kidney theft'

A MAN'S claims that his kidney was removed without his knowledge while unconscious have been met with skepticism from police in Guangzhou in Guangdong Province.
Initial investigations indicate that the man, surnamed Shu, sold his kidney for money, claim officers.
Police said Shu's account of events was inconsistent and that he "could not remember and tell things clearly," reported the Southern Metropolis Daily yesterday.
Chongqing native Shu said he traveled to Dongguan in Guangzhou seeking a job on February 15.
But Shu said he could not remember exactly what happened over a four-day period from February 19.
He claims he awoke in a motel room on the night of February 23 night with a pain in his abdomen.
Shu took a taxi to a nearby hospital where doctors confirmed that his left kidney had been removed and the wound stitched.
Shu told a paramedic that he had found 20,000 yuan (US$3,175) alongside him when he regained consciousness.
However, police said they did not see the money.
Police said the wound was made five to seven days ago and that they are still investigating the incident.
Officers have contacted the man's family.
A nurse at the hospital told the newspaper that staff had urged Shu to call the police but he seemed reluctant to do so.
The hospital alerted police the following day.
