Police uncover high-quality bogus yuan notes

Police in Changsha, capital of Hunan Province in central China have seized 360,000 yuan (US$57,000) worth of high-quality counterfeit 100-yuan notes.

Police said the fake notes, starting with serials of OG27 and B3H3, were copies of the 2005-edition banknotes, a report on the local news website, hunan.voc.com.cn, said today.

A robber surnamed Liu tipped off the police on April 26 that his friend surnamed Nie was going to sell bogus banknotes worth 200,000 yuan in exchange for lenient punishment.

Police surrounded the hotel where Nie was about to make illegal deals and arrested the 35-year-old man in his room. The officers also confiscated 200,000 yuan worth of bogus banknotes.

Another 160,000 yuan of fake notes was seized in his rented house, the report said.

Both Liu and Nie have criminal records and are under investigation.
