Police work pleases graduates

GRADUATES who found work as police officers, architects and tax workers last year turned out to be the most satisfied with their new jobs. according to a survey released yesterday.
Nearly 80 percent of the graduates who had picked those professions expressed satisfaction with their choice, the report by the MyCOS Institute, a consulting company that specializes in surveys of university students, said.
However, fewer than 50 percent of all employed graduates in the survey were happy in their work, the report found.
Those in private firms were the least satisfied while those working in government organizations and scientific research institutes were the happiest.
Nearly one in 10 of the 6 million college students who graduated last year hadn't yet landed a job, the report said.
Law, art design and communication students found the greatest difficulty in getting jobs, while engineering students were highly sought after.
For those who did find work, their average salary was 2,766 yuan (US$437.6), a 12 percent increase over the previous year.
Students majoring in engineering science received the highest salaries on average, with those majoring in education earning the least.
About 40 percent of students found work that had nothing to do with their majors, the most popular fields being sales, accounting, auditing and tax.
The number of graduate entrepreneurs is increasing, the report said. About 1.6 percent started businesses after graduation last year, compared to 1 percent in 2008.
