Policeman jailed for kidnapping his superior

A POLICE officer in Jilin Province has been sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined 80,000 yuan (US$11,765) by Huichun People's Court for kidnapping one of his superiors and demanding a ransom of 1 million yuan, a Jilin newspaper reported today.

Zheng Huanming, a director of Huichun Forest Public Security Bureau, first kidnapped the chauffeur of Liu Huai, director of Yanbian Forestry Administration, on November 18 last year with two accomplices, according to Changchun-based New Culture Daily.

They drove the car to Liu's home about 8am next morning and told Liu that they were from provincial prosecutor's office and would take him for questioning at Changchun, capital of the northeastern province.

At a public security checkpoint in Huichun City, police stopped them and found the chauffeur in handcuffs. Police caught Zheng's brother immediately, but Zheng and Sun managed to escape by ramming the car through the checkpoint about 10:30am. Knowing police were hunting them, Zheng released Liu and his chauffeur on a mountain. Police caught Zheng and Sun on November 24.

Zheng's brother Zheng Huanju was jailed for six and a half years with a fine of 40,000 yuan and Sun Jihong was sentenced to six years behind bars with 30,000 yuan penalty.
