Policeman sacked after failure to act 'caused 2 deaths'
A POLICE official in a town in northwest China's Gansu Province was sacked for failing to go to a crime scene immediately after answering an emergency call – allegedly leading to the deaths of another two people, China National Radio reported today.
Han Zhonghui, the head of the local police station in Chedao Township in Gansu, was dismissed yesterday due to the accusation of dereliction of his duty. The local authority has vowed to take care of the surviving family members of the victims.
Wang Fengbin, a villager in Gansu, was killed by another villager with a shovel after a fierce dispute on June 30 and his son and grandson were stabbed to death by the same person 16 minutes later.
Han received the emergency call after Wang had been killed, but he didn't drive to the murder scene immediately. This allowed the villager to continue with his rampage that led to the deaths of Wang's son and grandson.
If the police had intervened in time, Wang' son and grandson would not have been killed, the surviving family members complained. Han explained that there was no car at the police station when he answered the call, but his claim needed further investigation, according to the local authority.
An insider told to CNR that Wang's family members had already received 300,000 yuan (US$47,070) from the local authority as a subsidy to support their lives.
