Policeman under attack shoots suspect
Police in Ningbo City in eastern China's Zhejiang Province have seized nearly a dozen people on suspicion of assaulting police officers on Friday, during which an officer shot a suspect in self-defense.
The police station in Ningbo's Xiangshan County received a call at 1pm on Friday asking for help from an elderly woman who had lost her way, Youth Times reported yesterday.
Officer Wang Yudong and police assistants were driving her home in Danxi Subdistrict when their way was blocked by a woman in her 20s who was standing in the middle of a lane talking on her mobile phone, the report said.
She verbally abused officers on duty when police assistant Chen Haihao asked her to move, the report alleged.
Officer Wang showed his badge and explained the situation to her but they were surrounded by her fellow townspeople, who allegedly attacked him with fists, shovels, stones and broomsticks.
Wang initially defended himself with his tear gas spray but a woman bit him on the right hand, the report said.
He drew his pistol from his holster and fired a warning shot, the report said, but then a man allegedly tried to snatch his gun. Wang shot him in the shoulder, the newspaper said.
Wang then drove the injured man to hospital but was allegedly beaten again by the young woman and some of her friends there, along with two other officers.
The man shot by Wang was surnamed Ma, 26, from Suzhou City in Anhui Province. He has been sent to a hospital in Shanghai but is in no danger from his wound.
Ningbo police said Wang's use of self-defense complied with the law.
