Policeman-turned-kidnapper is jailed

A POLICEMAN in northeastern China has been jailed for 14 years and fined 50,000 yuan (US$7321) for kidnapping a transport director, a central Henan-based newspaper reported today.

Wang Haiming, 37, a former economic investigation captain, lured Changbai County's transport bureau director to a car along with another man on October 19 last year, Dahe Daily reported.

They switched off the victim Song's mobile, hooded him and drove him to a forest, where they handcuffed him to a tree, the report said.

Song promised to pay 2 million yuan in ransom before Wang let him go, the court heard in Jilin Province.

Song paid a first installment of 500,000 yuan the next day, when Wang asked him to bring another 250,0000 yuan to a gas station the following week.

But police were lying in wait for him to pick up the cash, and traced Wang's gray sedan. Wang admitted the charges and returned more than 150,000 yuan.
