Policemen suspended for taking mine cash

THREE senior police officers have been removed from their positions after money was paid to their office by mining company executives in Hunan Province on Thursday.

The office has been ordered to return all the 345,700 yuan (US$50,600), yesterday's Chengdu Business News reported.

The executives said they were invited to the opening ceremony of a new office of Jiahe County Security Bureau on Wednesday and the money was to congratulate the police. The office is mostly concerned with the mining industry.

Hunan TV showed footage of the executives lining up to pay money at the opening ceremony and officers busy counting cash with electronic cash counters.

Another mine executive told reporters that more than 100 people had given money. The amounts ranged from 3,000 yuan to 9,600 yuan.

Xiao Yi, vice director of Jiahe Security Bureau, Li Junping, captain of the bureau's new mining office, and Huang Zhizhong, the political supervisor of the office, have been suspended from work. They are being investigated.
