Political adviser sentenced to death

A SENIOR political adviser in central China's Henan Province was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve yesterday for taking more than 9.1 million yuan (US$1.3 million) in bribes. His property was ordered confiscated.

Sun Shanwu, deputy head of Henan's provincial advisory body, was found guilty of taking the money from nine real estate bosses and offering preferential treatment in exchange.

Sun pocketed the illegal income when he was the Party chief of Luoyang City in Henan and a senior member of the provincial government from 2002 to 2008.

The Intermediate People's Court in Weifang of east China's Shandong Province said all the money had been traced back after Sun was detained in 2008.

A criminal investigation on his wife, son, daughter-in-law, daughter and son-in-law is under way, officials said.
