Pollution probe after giant fish kill

GOVERNMENT officials have launched an investigation into industrial pollution that was claimed to have killed up to 200 million yuan (US$29.53 million) worth of fish and crabs in central China.

Preliminary investigation indicated that two paper mills had illegally discharged waste water, polluting about 26,667 hectares of fishing ponds in Luhu Lake in Hunan Province's Yiyang City, today's Guangzhou Daily reported, citing Wang Qiuyang, an official in charge of the probe.

Luhu Lake is in the southern Dongting Lake area, dotted with fish farms, farmer Wang Jianming told the newspaper.

Wang has been fishing for 26 years in Sanxi Village. He invested more than 1 million yuan this year in stock, mostly loans from friends, but all his fish and crabs died within a week, he said.

Of the 32 fish farmers in his village, eight had invested more than 10 million yuan this year, he added.

Another farmer Wang Yonghua said there were 18 farmers in his village and the loss could amount to 20 million yuan.

Farmers said the lake water started turning black last Tuesday and massive fish and crab deaths followed. Birds also died after eating the dead fish.
