Pollution problems
The Ministry of Environmental Protection yesterday released its 2014 Environment Condition Communique, revealing serious air and groundwater pollution problems.
Of the 161 major cities that were subjected to air quality monitoring in the year, just 16 met the new national standard, the document said.
The standard was implemented in 2013 and includes a PM2.5 index for monitoring airborne particles.
Meanwhile, authorities detected acid rain in 30 percent of the 470 cities monitored, while just 11 percent of the 4,896 sites monitored for groundwater were classed as being of “excellent” quality.
The study found that 96 percent of the nation’s drinking water met national quality standards.
