Poor county accused of wasting public fund on watches
A poverty-stricken county in southwestern Yunnan Province drew wide criticism after it announced to spend 600,000 yuan (US$94,000) of public money to buy souvenir watches for local lawmakers, China News Service reported today.
The announcement posted on the website of Funing County government showed that it will buy 978 watches for local congress deputies and members of the local political consultative conference, an advisory body to local legislators.
Funning County is on the national list for poverty relief.
A local government procurement official admitted the budget for the 978 watches and said the price of each watch is within 600 yuan.
He said the county leaders attached great importance to the holding of this year's congress meeting and political consultative conference because many representatives were newly elected. He considered it normal to give them souvenirs.
Professor Lin Zhe of the Politics and Law Department of the Central Party School of CPC, said it was a total waste of taxpayer's money to present expensive and unnecessary gifts to conference attendants.
She feared that such gifts would influence voting results and become a new form of bribery.
