Poor county builds extravagant government mansion

AN impoverished rural county in eastern Anhui Province reportedly spent 63.75 million yuan (US$10 million) on a lavish government building while its annual fiscal revenue was only 172 million with a balance of just 210,000 yuan.

Wangjiang County government used 12.13 hectares of farmland to build its grandiose office building of 43,600 square meters, about eight times the size of the White House, Xinhua News Agency said.

Official investigators from Anqing City, which rules over Wangjiang, said the building was extravagant and its approval procedure was incomplete, Xinhua reported.

The six-floor building overlooks an enormous public square with cafes, a music fountain and a stage. The building is covered with granite slabs and aluminum-panel curtain walls -- both banned for use in government buildings, said Wang Bin, deputy director of Anqing Discipline Inspection Commission.

Wang said the 63.75-million-yuan construction fund came from the local government, relief money from the central government and the project contractor. He said farmers who lost land to the project have been compensated.
