Poor disinfection sparks Hep C outbreak
NINETEEN kidney patients in east China have developed Hepatitis C infections after sloppy hygiene in a clinic.
Experts from Anhui Province's Lu'an City, where Huoshan County Hospital is, have published the results of an investigation, today's People's Daily reported.
Staff failed to disinfect or sterilize dialysis equipment for each patient, the experts said. The hospital did not have separate dialysis rooms for infected patients, and poor management and disinfection measures had contributed to cross-infection, the report said.
The investigation showed nine of the 28 infected had contracted hepatitis C before receiving dialysis.
Ye Yijun, director of the hospital, has been sacked. Two deputy hospital heads and the nurses and staff responsible have received administrative penalties.
Infected patients are to get free treatment and health checks for family members.
