Poor kids to get more free school

THE government is planning to phase out tuition fees for senior high school and secondary vocational school pupils from poor backgrounds as part of its latest economic and social development program, according to a senior official.

Assistance programs for preschool education will also be explored during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20), said Du Yubo, vice minister of education.

In order to improve the effectiveness of the proposal, local authorities should allocate aid on a case by case basis, he said, without providing any details.

According to a Ministry of Education report, more than 142.1 billion yuan (US$21.9 billion) was allocated to student assistance programs in 2014, up 20 percent from the previous year.

Also in 2014, 85.4 million yuan was paid to young people — from preschool to university age — in the form of financial aid, a rise of 7 percent from 2013, it said.
