Pop singer detained over drug use

ANOTHER pop singer has been detained by police for drug use, escalating public concerns about drug abuse in the entertainment industry on Chinese mainland.

Man Wenjun, his wife and more than 10 people attending her birthday party on Monday night at the Coco Banana venue in Beijing tested positive to urine tests after a police raid early yesterday morning, The Beijing News reported today.

Police said they found drugs in Man's room and the pub has been ordered to suspend business.

More than 10 police cars were involved in the raid, according to a residential compound security guard near the venue.

He told The Beijing News that most of the people detained were females.

Man's involvement in drug use has escalated the public concern for drug abuse in the entertainment industry.

A string of drug use scandals have been reported since the first report in 1997 of rock singer Luo Qi.

Movie director Zhang Yuan and his staff were discovered using drugs in a studio in Beijing in January, 2008. The staff included renowned photographer Xie Zhengyu, recorder Wu Lala and sculptor Mi Qiu.

Pop singer Xie Dong was caught in May, 2007, using drugs with his girl friend in his mother's apartment in Beijing. Ice and ecstasy were found in the residence.

Two members of the Zero rock band were detained by police in April, 2004, for using ecstasy at a pub in Qingdao City, Shandong Province.

Pop singer Jing Gangshan was found carrying drugs when going through a security check at the Capital Airport in October, 2003.
