Pop singer jailed over arranging fatal affray
POP singer Zang Tianshuo was jailed for six years yesterday for organizing an affray in which someone was killed.
Since he had been detained for a year, his term will end in 2014, according to the Sina.com.cn Website.
The victim's family said they were pleased with the verdict and would not appeal for a second trial after the sentence was announced at Beijing's No. 2 Intermediate People's Court.
Zang, 45, thought the sentence was too severe, according to his lawyer.
The lawyer said Zang had reached a consensus with the victim's family before the trial, agreeing to pay compensation of 290,000 yuan (US$42,467).
The court heard that Zang had a dispute with his partner Sun Baohe over a disco bar they owned and had ordered the bar's manager Lu Changchun, 44, to bring people to "solve the dispute."
Lu summoned almost 100 people who were armed with clubs, iron pipes and knives to fight 20 others led by Sun on June 20, 2003. One man was killed in the fight.
Zang told the court he asked Lu to "solve the dispute," not to "beat people." But Lu said Zang told him to beat the opponents if the two sides failed to reach an agreement.
Lu fled the scene but was caught by police in the northeast China city of Changchun in July 2008.
He was sentenced at the court yesterday to nine years in jail.
Zang was one of China's first rock musicians and was voted the most popular mainland singer/songwriter at the 2003 Chinese Music Awards.
