Pop singer jailed over fatal brawl

POP singer Zang Tianshuo was jailed for six years this morning by a Beijing court for organizing an armed fight in which one man was killed.

Since he has been in detention for one year, he will get out of prison in 2014, according to Beijing-based news portal Sina.com.cn.

The victim's family said they were pleased by the result announced by Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court. Earlier they agreed to accept compensation from Zang of 290,000 yuan (US$42,470).

Zang, 45, who protested his innocence, felt the sentence was too severe, according to his lawyer. He has not decided whether to appeal against the verdict.

Zang had a dispute with his partner Sun Baohe over a disco bar they owned. He ordered the bar's manager Lu Changchun to bring people to solve the dispute, according to the court.

Lu summoned almost 100 people who were armed with clubs, iron pipes and knives to join a fight with 20 others led by Sun on June 20, 2003. One man was killed in the fight.

Zang told the court he asked Lu to "solve the dispute," not to "beat people." But Lu said Zang told him to beat the opponents if the two sides failed to agree.
