Popular lake cleans up its act for tourists
QINGHAI Lake, a popular tourist destination in northwest China’s Qinghai Province, is spending 11.92 million yuan (US$1.81 million) to install or upgrade toilets, according to the lake’s management bureau.
Some 1.28 million yuan has been used to upgrade 32 toilets around the lake, while the rest is being used to install 13 environmentally friendly toilets and 11 unisex toilets, said Zhang Shengxiang, head of the Qinghai Lake tourism company’s business department.
A national tourist attraction, Qinghai Lake had received 3.2 million tourists this year as of mid-October, up 77 percent year on year. But there were complaints about the lack of toilets and the area was criticized by the government for its toilet problem.
Now, however, the toilets are clean and tidy, and there are facilities for babies and disabled people, according to the bureau.
