Population official is jailed for embezzling

A RETIRED senior official of China's population authority was jailed for 12 years after embezzling 850,000 yuan (US$124,430) of public funds.

Beijing No.1 Intermediate People's Court has handed down the verdict on Chen Shengli, 64, retired publicity and education director of the National Population and Family Planning Commission, yesterday's Beijing News reported.

The court said Chen transferred 800,000 yuan earmarked for a research program to China Population Press.

The press transferred money to a consulting office started by Chen.

The National Audit Office detected the loopholes in the office's books.

In court, Chen said the consulting office is a partnership business and the revenue should not be regarded as his personal income.
