Porn sites shut down in Internet cleanup
MORE than 2,000 pornographic websites have been shut in a nationwide crackdown that began in February, authorities said yesterday.
The campaign, launched by the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications, aims to create a “clean” cyber space and better manage markets near schools where illegal publications were being sold, according to a statement released by the office.
Over 1.16 million “publications illegal for children” have been seized and more than 400 cases involving the sale of such publications dealt with, including over 80 criminal cases, it said.
Officials said this year had seen an increase in such cases with more minors involved compared to previous years.
Anti-pornography authorities in Beijing and Zhejiang Province investigated several online chat service providers for spreading pornographic and harmful information, it said.
The office has pledged to harshly crack down on online pornography.
