Porn-block developer is hacked, threatened
THE head of a software company in Henan Province said yesterday that he and his firm have been harassed by death threats and hacker attacks because of its controversial product - the Internet software filter Green Dam.
Zhang Chenmin, general manager of Zhengzhou-based Jinhui Computer System Engineering Co, which won the bid to develop the Green Dam-Youth Escort last year, said his company has received more than 1,000 harassing calls since early this month.
The threats came after the Chinese government announced it would require all new computers sold in the country to be pre-installed with Green Dam software packages that block access to pornographic Websites.
Nightmares
"Most of the calls came late at night, cursing our staff and uttering obscenities, voicing their resentment against the software," Zhang said.
"I got a call last night, threatening to kill my child and my wife."
Zhang said the callers were from both home and abroad and that personal information on some Green Dam programmers had been released on the Internet.
He also said Jinhui's Website had been under continuous attacks by hackers, severely affecting customer service.
"We are now under great pressure, and our company is at a critical moment," he said. "I never expected the software to bring us so many troubles. Our aim is simply to protect children from Internet pornography."
He said Jinhui, which was founded in 1997, has focused on research in filtering technology for online porn.
